WILLIAM OSCAR WRIGHT

Reverend William Oscar Wright, age 66, died at the family home, 811 Gift street, at 10:26 a.m. Friday, August 22, 1952, following an illness of several weeks.
He was born at Hubbard, January 11, 1886.  As a young man he engaged in ranching and livestock raising in Jack county.  He entered the ministry in 1916 after graduating as a theological student of Baylor University.  He served as pastor of a Waco church, later at Caldwell and came to Marlin as pastor of the First Baptist Church in 1937.  His wife was formerly Miss Nell Burgess of Fort Worth, they were married in 1907.
Eight years ago he accepted a call to serve as pastor of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at Dallas.  He remained there only six months when he responded to a community wide request that brought him back as pastor of the Marlin church where he continued his services until his voluntary retirement in April 1951.
He was held in high esteem by friends and acquaintances for his religious leadership and work among stricken and needy cases.  He served as president of the Marlin United Charities and as an official with that welfare group during almost the entire time he was the Baptist pastor in this city.  The church membership and physical features of the church were notably expanded here during his ministry.  The Latin-American Baptist Church in Marlin was founded through his influence.
Friends in Marlin sought to have the Wrights remain here following his retirement from church duties and a new was presented to them.  His death occurred in this Friday morning.
Funeral services at 3:30 p.m. Saturday from the First Baptist Church in Marlin.  The church pastor Rev. Loyd Chapman, Rev. W. W. Melton of Waco, and Rev. E. M. Putnam of Marlin, officiating.  Burial in Calvary cemetery.
The body will lie in state at the Adams Funeral chapel until one hour before the funeral hour.
Surviving are his widow at Marlin. One daughter, Mrs. John Stevens, Matador.  Four sisters, Mrs. H. B. Carson, Mrs. Nina Sherrill and Miss Gladys Wright, all of Wichita Falls, and Mrs. W. D. Woodruff, Edinburg.  Two brothers, Marvin Wright, Fort Worth, and Lloyd Wright, Burkburnett. Also three grandchildren.
